A comic book is a magazine that has panels of pictures and
words which create a story. Even though comic is part of the name description
the narratives are not always humorous. This website will introduce some
Latino/a comic book artists ranging from cartoonists to writers. A main influence for
Latino/a artists was the absence of Latino/a comic characters. Comics have been
around since the year 1837 and it has not been until recently that Latino artists have
been recognized.
The first Latino Comics Expo was held in 2011 at the Cartoon Art Museum in San
Francisco, California. The goal was to recognize the creativity of comic book artists
whose work reflects the influence and celebration of the Latino culture. This comic expo
is the Latino version of the Comic Con, and has been a great success to present day.
This website highlights the work of Jose Cabrera (cartoonist), Liz Mayorga
(illustrator and writer), Sergio Aragones (cartoonist), and Graciela Rodriguez
(cartoonist). A main focus the founders of the Latino Comics Expo, Ricardo Padilla
and Javier Hernandez, was to share Latino creative work to the public, in which Latinos
can reclaim their culture and voices.
